In Retrospect: A Year of Wanderlust, Learning, and Achievement

I asked Bard to rewrite my previous post and I have to say I do like the result. It makes my year so much better!

As the year draws to a close, I find myself reflecting upon the past twelve months, a tapestry of experiences both familiar and novel. Initially, I pondered the swift passage of time, questioning whether I had accomplished anything of note. Yet, as the memories trickled back, I realized that the year had been a whirlwind of events, each one etching itself upon the parchment of my life. 

My travels took me to far-flung corners of the globe, from the ancient streets of Segovia to the bustling markets of Valencia. The highlight of the year, without a doubt, was our spontaneous voyage to Japan, a land of enchantment and cultural vibrancy. The memories of that journey will forever remain etched in my mind, a testament to the power of adventure. 

 My photographic endeavors flourished, with my mobile phone serving as my faithful companion, capturing fleeting moments of beauty and emotion. My Canon 400D and first SLR, a Canon EOS300, also played their part, preserving the essence of each scene. However, it was the collages I created that truly ignited my passion for photography. These intricate assemblages of images, meticulously crafted with my own script, became a visual symphony, each piece complementing the others to create a harmonious whole. 

 My yearning to learn new things persisted throughout the year, fueled by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to expand my horizons. I devoured books, delved into online courses, and even picked up a new skill – table tennis. While my athletic pursuits may not have reached their full potential, my intellectual pursuits flourished. 

 My professional life took an exciting turn, as I assumed the role of Chief Product Owner Digital Business Solutions. This new challenge demanded long hours and unwavering dedication, but the rewards were commensurate. The trips to Derby and Stuttgart were particularly rewarding, allowing me to showcase the innovative products we were developing and receive the plaudits of our colleagues. The icing on the cake was the RR internal Trusted to Deliver Excellence award, a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team. 

 Of course, not everything was perfect. There were moments of frustration, challenges that tested my resolve, and trials that demanded my resilience. But as Michael Ende wisely observed, these are stories for another time, tales that will be recounted in the hushed whispers of reflection. 

 As I bid farewell to 2023 and welcome the dawn of a new year, I do so with a heart filled with gratitude and a spirit brimming with anticipation. The future beckons, a canvas upon which I shall paint my dreams and aspirations. May the coming year be filled with new experiences, challenges to overcome, and triumphs to celebrate. Let us raise a glass to the year that was and the year that is yet to come, for it is in the pursuit of the unknown that our true potential lies.

2023: A year in review

As the year draws to a close I look back and realise there is a lot to be thankful for in 2023. Initially I thought, where did the time go? Did I do anything this year at all? After a while memories started to flow and, well, it turns out 2023 was another busy year full of events worth being remembered. Indeed, having a look at my agenda, there is a lot to remember in 2023.

For one, I visited a lot of places, old and new. Undoubtedly the highlight was our trip to Japan with a last-minute ticket. Such an unforgettable experience! So much so that I wrote a 60-page booklet with the travel diary. However there is much more to it than Japan as we had a great day in Segovia, enjoyed Gandía and Valencia, left Lisbon and New Delhi wishing we had had more time to explore and, last but not least, revisited Madrid, El Toboso and Alhama de Aragón to name a few places. All this traveling left a tally of nice photos, mostly taken with my mobile, some with my Canon 400D and very few on a yet to be developed film roll with my first SLR, a Canon EOS300.

And related to photos, this year I spent some time developing my own script to create collages, a project which is permanently work-in-progress and for which I never seem to find enough time. Although it is also fair to say that it already covers about 90% of my use cases, ie an easy way to create a matrix out of several photos to publish it in my blog. It is difficult to tell what is my best (public) photo of the year with so many contending nice ones. Oddly enough considering the marvelous photos in Japan, maybe the best one is the photo I snapped of a lone jogging woman in Berlin?

This also reminds me that this year I wanted to do more sport, which I didn't. If it counts, I played a lot of table tennis with my son during Summer. Good that soon is the time for New Year resolutions again :-) And while sport may not have been my forte this year, one thing I did reasonably well was to keep a curious attitude while learning new stuff both at work and at home through books and online courses. Growth mindset is not a one off effort.

Work wise, I ended up working way more hours than I intended to in my new role as Chief Product Owner Digital Business Solutions. Mostly fun but one to watch out in 2024. The trips to Derby and Stuttgart were a blast, showing the world what we are doing and getting incredibly encouraging feedback. People just love our product and receiving the RR internal Trusted to Deliver Excellence award was the icing on the cake.

Not everything was great, of course, but as Michael Ende said, that is another story and shall be told another time.

Valorando lo que tienes

Esta foto que hice hace unas semanas mientras iba con prisas a un sitio me hace valorar lo que tenemos. He mirado las fotos de hace 25 años, diez días intensos a principios de diciembre de 1998 en los que volví de Cranfield, asistí a la  ceremonia de graduación y me fui a Armilla a empezar la mili. Hoy en día seguramente tendría muchas fotos y vídeos de recuerdo.

Twenty five years ago today my housemates and other friends in Cranfield threw an unexpected farewell party for me. I was leaving the following day back to Spain since a few days later I was meant to join the Air Force training for my military service (conscription was still a thing). I was in my room getting ready, someone asked me to come down and all of a sudden the house was full of people. Unforgettable.

It´s easy to have nice memories when you are surrounded by great people.

Reflexiones

 La semana pasado estuvimos en España y aprovechamos para visitar las tumbas de mis abuelos en El Toboso y en Alhama de Aragón. De camino a El Toboso pasamos por Ocaña y por Quintanar de la Orden, donde también hay enterrados familiares que acabaron allí y no en el cementario del pueblo por la guerra civil. En uno de esos días juraba la Constitución la nieta del emérito, que fue rey por decisión de un dictador, así que mientras conducía tomé una nota mental para esta entrada. Todo pasa y hay que mirar hacia delante, sí, pero sin olvidar de donde venimos ni a donde no queremos volver.

One thing I love about mobile phones is that you always have a good camera with you. Which is great as you never know when you will need it and often times you only have one chance for the shot.

Sometimes you can plan and craft the details to create a photo. Other times the photo is already there, just waiting to be taken.

Six Views of Mount Fuji

 

Almost a month ago I took these (and many more) photos of Mt Fuji, just seventeen kilometers away from it. One of the few times I wished I had a better camera and a proper tripod with me (I stopped lugging a tripod with me as I used to ten years ago). Which means that the tripod in one of the photos above is not mine, it belongs to a japanase photographer with way better gear than me who was there patiently taking photos. I wish I knew how his photos came out. Despite the language barrier we exchanged a few smiles and head vows as we both had Canon cameras. I guess there is always a chance that the internet will make its magic and connect us.

How to plan a two-week holiday in Japan in a few days

TL;DR

Step 1: Buy your tickets in the last minute. 

Step 2: Hurry up!

In a burst of spontaneity a month ago, we bought flight tickets to Japan on Sunday 9th for a flight departing on Monday 17th from Frankfurt with a stopover in New Delhi. We left home on Sunday to drive down to the airport, stopping by in Leipzig to visit my mother in law, so not a lot of time available for planning such a trip, even less considering I was still fully working that week. So we focused on the essential bits and managed to do the following before leaving:

• get an eVisa in case we would get out of the airport in the stopover in India. We only took the decision once we were in New Delhi, tired from the overnight flight but eager to see at least the Akshardham temple.
• book a hotel in Tokyo for initial 6 days with a rough idea of what to visit and draft itinerary for rest of the days, details to be arranged on the go. We did it through booking.com and we got a free taxi transfer from Narita to Tokyo (which is a long long way). Even better, we got an extremely nice chinese taxi driver who made the trip very enjoyable with her comments.
• buy 7-day JR passes and Suica cards, thanks to this shop in Berlin.
• download a few maps and make sure we had a translation app. As back-up we bought a German-Japanese phrase book in Leipzig on Sunday evening.
• buy one eSim card for India and another one for Japan. This was a very last minute (last second?)  thing even by the standards of this trip and turned out to be a lifesaver. We bought them on the day we were flying out and it hugely simplified our life, no need to queue for sim cards at airports, no need to book and return wifi packs, etc. If you travel around the world, check Airalo, great value for money. Plus, shameless plug, you can use JC8079 as referral code to get a few dollars discount on first booking.
• forget the second battery pack for my sixteen-year old camera and, even worse, the charger. The solution was to create an account in Amazon in Japan and have one of each delivered to my hotel (btw, it turns out that batteries and chargers for old Canon cameras are super cheap in Japan!, bullet dodged...)

Although we were each allowed to check in 46 kg plus hand luggage, we decided to travel light and just take a carry-on and a rucksack each, which were not even full! The lady at the check-in desk in Frankfurt airport was amused as everyone else on that flight seemed to be lugging huge suitcases.

Inspired by Molinos and her roadtrip last year, I bought a notepad and managed to write something often enough to keep some of the magical details. Just that she writes about a million times better than I do, however it´s the intention that matters and it will be a nice thing to read in twenty years.

And just like that, we were off to a great adventure!

He contado los aeropuertos por los que he pasado y me salen 51, aunque no puedo asegurar a ciencia cierta no haberme olvidado de alguno (por ejemplo sé que he estado varias veces en París pero no recuerdo si en Charles de Gaulle, en Orly o en los dos).

Más datos inútiles:

• En aproximadamente la mitad de los aeropuertos he estado por el trabajo (sobre todo los más lejanos y los del Reino Unido que no son del área metropolitana de Londres).
• En trece de ellos simplemente hice escala de camino a algún sitio sin siquiera ver la ciudad. De hecho en un caso hicimos escala y ni siquiera salimos del avión (!)
• Unos treinta aeropuertos están en Europa (o estaban, porque Tegel y Tempelhof ya no existen como aeropuertos). 
• El país en el que en más aeropuertos he estado no es España, es Reino Unido.
• Y como curiosidad final, en algunas ocasiones el aeropuerto de despegue y el de destino fue el mismo: en Cuatro Vientos para las clases prácticas de Mecánica de Vuelo en la carrera y en Torrejón de Ardoz en un vuelo de reabastecimiento durante la mili (yo no iba en un caza, ya me hubiera gustado)

Quedan muchas cosas por ver y descubrir...

El año pasado hubo una petición de sugerencias, en principio se supone que para tenerlas en cuenta al redactar la nueva resolución. Sin embargo, tengo la impresión de que en vez de avanzar, retrocedemos.

Encuentro particularmente preocupante el nuevo artículo 2.1.5, algo que me niego a creer haya sido pedido por ninguna familia, porque nosotros sencillamente lo que pedimos es que se le conceda una plaza a cualquiera que lo solicite y que el estado ponga los medios para ello.

2.1.5. En el caso de que en un aula haya más solicitudes que plazas vacantes, teniendo en cuenta el número máximo de alumnado señalado en el artículo 18.1 de la Orden EDU/3122/2010, de 23 de noviembre, y no se puedan crear nuevos grupos, las consejerías establecerán listas de espera de acuerdo con los criterios organizativos establecidos por cada consejería.

ALCE en la radio

 

Hace unos días estuve en la radio para un episodio de Cosmo en español sobre multilingüismo, que se puede escuchar durante doce meses en este enlace. Mi entrevista hablando de ALCE aparece a partir del minuto 50 en la sección Panorama con el locutor y redactor del programa, Rubén Gómez del Barrio, con el que fue un placer conversar.

Imaginaros un centro completamente subvencionado donde vuestros hijos pudieran asistir. Insisto, de forma gratuita para aprender no solo español, sino también mantener y fortalecer los vínculos con España. Bueno, pues estos centros existen, se llaman alce, agrupaciones de lengua y cultura españolas, y en Alemania hay más de 100 aulas repartidas por todo el territorio. Con todo, y a pesar de que estas aulas son todo un regalo para las familias españolas o para aquellas que, al menos 1 de los padres tenga nacionalidad española, a veces no se pueden abrir porque tiene que haber un mínimo de 14 inscripciones, pues para incentivar esas aulas para que se sigan abriendo por todo El País, me acompaña en el estudio Juan Carlos Cabrejas, representante de padres del aula alce en Berlín, a seguir. Bueno, tus hijos asisten a esas clases. Cuéntame en qué consisten y cómo se desarrollan. 

JC 

Bueno, consisten en unas clases que se dividen en, básicamente en dos partes, hay una que es presencial, un día a la semana, los niños o las niñas van a un colegio cerca de su casa y allí un profesor. Hay un temario que les va explicando cosas. Es una clase normal y luego además de eso hay una una cosa que se llama Aula Internacional, esto es una plataforma online en la que los alumnos o el alumnado, pues se tiene que se tiene que dar de alta y entonces pues digamos cada semana hay unas ciertas actividades que pueden ser escuchar un texto, escribir un pequeño comentario y están adaptadas a las edades de los de los alumnos.

¿En casa, tú hablas con tus hijos en en español, pero qué pasa? Eso no es suficiente como para que esos niños aprendan el español de forma correcta, también con la gramática y demás o. 

JC 

Sí, bueno, eso es yo creo que es una cosa que nos pasa a todos los, a toda la gente que estamos en el extranjero no. ¿Como conseguimos transmitir la la lengua, y está claro que hablamos en español, pero yo puedo con mis hijos, pues más allá de los Whatsapp, pues digamos que no escribimos demasiado, no? Entonces, cosas como la gramática, cosas como, bueno, pues muchas cosas que el el lenguaje oral es una cosa, el lenguaje escrito es es otra, y ahí es una cosa en la que en no hay nada que te impida como padre, sentarte y hacerlo con tus hijos, pero también es verdad que muchas veces, pues tener un profesor ayuda ayuda en estos temas y luego no hay que olvidar que claro, una. Cosa eso en las áreas de lengua. ¿A las de Satanás de Cultura, no? Y hay cosas que pues pues a lo mejor vamos a doblar. Hoy vamos a hablar un día de las Meninas, pues efectivamente, cualquier padre se puede sentar y hablar de las Meninas con sus hijos, pero a lo mejor si es el tema y bueno es que hoy toca hablar de de Lope de Vega, pues mira, pues vamos a hablar del Siglo de Oro en España, te digamos que son cosas que también son un poquito, van un poquito más.

Allá de la lengua, y decididamente, ayudan mucho. Bueno. Son un total de 10 años. Al final de los cuales los alumnos reciben un certificado expedido por el Ministerio. Español de educación.

O cuando la meta es es es aprender, no, yo creo que los diplomas bienvenidos sean, pero yo creo que la meta que es. Siempre el el aprendizaje y el la salsa están estructuradas de acuerdo con el sistema europeo de lenguajes, con lo cual está el a 1 YB 1 b dos, el C 1 YY el.

C dos profesores nativos. He leído por Internet que son docentes llegados de España. 

JC 

Una de las mejores cosas que tienes realmente son los profesores, porque le echan una cantidad de de pasión y motivación que la verdad es que no, no está apagado, o sea, son gente. Que es, es impresionante las ganas que le echan programas, son clases que son en algunos casos son muy complicadas. Claro, es relativamente fácil tener un grupo de 20 niños, que todos van a la misma vez, pero en el caso es alce a veces que en algunas, pues digamos que están los los. Los niveles están mezclados porque no hay, no hay suficientes niños para tener una clase de 20 para La 1. Otra clase de 20 para el B dos ya. Y así, y sin embargo, pues lo profesores hacen lo que lo lo que pueden y echándole muchas ganas y mucha, mucha pasión. Vamos a insistir en ese número, porque claro, tiene que haber un mínimo de 14 inscripciones para que un aula se pueda celebrar, o sea, es es un tema delicado, porque si es cierto que hacen falta 11414 alumnos y luego hay números mínimos máximos, de cuánta gente sé cuántos niños se pueden tener en. En en cada una los niveles null cuando meten el detalle, pues tenemos que hay bastantes, bastantes cosas, no para nuestra suerte, pues en la Consejería y los técnicos que están ahí pues tenemos que estar en cargo de todo ello. Los padres en realidad tienen.

Que hacer relativamente poco bueno. ¿Hay aulas hace por todo El País más de 100, pero nos consta que todavía hay muchos padres madres que no saben de la existencia de de estos cursos se están enterando ahora a través de Cosmo en español y se preguntaran dónde puedo consultar? ¿Donde están estos centros? Y, sobre todo, cómo proceder a la matrícula que hago a. 

JC 

¿Dónde voy? Sí. Es una cosa que a mí también me sigue sorprendiendo. ¿Mucho después de muchos años en Alemania de encontrarme con españoles YY decirle a por mis hijos, van a clases de español? ¿Ah, pero, y eso cómo? ¿Cómo funciona? No es una cosa que es bastante recurrente, lo más fácil en este caso es realmente. ¿Yo creo que irse a Google, irse a la página de la Consejería en la página de Ministerio de Educación tiene 111 página que está dedicada a la salsa, y ahí es la que estaba para para Alemania, no? Y ahí digamos que están todas. Un montón de información. ¿Cuál es el aula? Que te pilla más cerca. Y ahí, pues digamos que están las. Todos los pasos.

Bueno decir que las familias también están muy involucradas porque en paralelo a las clases se organizan quedadas u otras actividades culturales y festivas para favorecer los vínculos de amistad entre padres e hijos. 

JC 

Sí, yo creo que es una cosa inherente a todos los que estamos en el extranjero, que da una forma cuando vas por la calle y hablar español porque te giras. ¿La la cabeza? Pues bueno, si tienes un grupo de 152030. Unos pocos hacen. De los padres siempre hay alguna oportunidad para quedar. Cada aula es un poco especial, pero por ejemplo también depende un poco también del profesor, pero sí que es cierto que en en muchos casos pues hacen, por ejemplo, yo que sé excursiones, es decir, vamos a ir con los niños a que sea Instituto Cervantes, porque a una exposición o también cosas típicas como en bueno pues quedamos en Navidad o quedamos año en Año Nuevo cantamos con tu villancicos YY bueno, pues es una cosa que también.

¿Ayuda, no? Volviendo al tema de cómo contactar con con vosotros con estos centros yo antes he puesto en Google. Alce aulas alce, Alemania y la información, como comentabas, Juan Carlos está ahí, a más que muy bien detallada, pero con todo. También decir que es una pena que los hispanohablantes no españoles no tengan acceso a eso. Cursos hace que desde aquí hacemos una llamada a los Gobiernos y embajadas de otros países donde se habla español para que apoyen a sus nativos residentes en el extranjero para que sus hijos gocen de la posibilidad de aprendizaje de su lengua y cultura.

La verdad que es una cosa que estaría, es una pena por partida doble, primero. Porque hay gente. De, pues yo que sé, de estos países, México con. Argentina. Cuando no puede venir a las a las alce me pongo otra parte. Si estas otras aulas estuvieran disponibles, pues nuestros hijos también podrían edad ya las aulas, con lo cual habría un montón más de posibilidades de bueno, pues más educación, más educación nunca viene mal y además, una cosa que yo repito a menudo es que sea gastarse el dinero en temas de educación, esto no es nuevo en el apartado de costes, van en el. Apartado de inversión. Exacto, ahí está entonces mejor inversión que está Creo que no va a haber.

I added a feature to my collage script to add a grey frame to each photo. One thing about programming is exactly this, if you want something, it´s in your hands to do it (at least for simple features).

2023 - 1998 = 25

1998 fue un año intenso para mí. Justo hoy hace veinticinco años llegué a Cranfield para hacer el proyecto fin de carrera allí. Lo cual quiere decir que llevo media vida fuera de España.

Cuantas vueltas y cuantas cosas buenas me han pasado en estos veinticinco años...

AI Tools - coding and photos

As it was to be expected, it did not take long before my attention drifted towards a coding topic. I sometimes post here a collection of photos and I usually prepare them manually.

With this in mind, I had a short conversation with ChatGPT as per below:

Q: I know a bit of python. I would like to make a jupyter notebook that allows me to select images in my computer and make a collage with them. Can you help with this and explain your choice of libraries?

I still had to change the code quite a bit to make it work but it definitely helped. Strangely enough, I never say thanks to my car for taking me from one place to another but it seemed reasonable to say Thanks to ChatGPT.

So some examples generated quickly. I like it that photos are now perfectly aligned and centered and I can play a bit with the margin width.

Unlike most photos in this blog, the one above was not taken by me. In fact, it is not even a photo as it was generated with an AI tool. First I used ChatGPT to make a summary of a long text so that I could use it as a prompt in Blue Willow to generate an image. The prompt was an impressive good summary of the text, and after some tweaking I got an image which was acceptable (somehow there are not many photos of bookshops and instead libraries and law firms keep coming up).

In any case, interesting what can be done these days.

Output (note some mistakes in the summary, she leaves the bookshop with the note, not JC):

A man named JC goes to a bookshop in downtown Berlin to leave a booklet of his short stories on a shelf. He is worried that the book may be thrown away, but he decides to stay and watch over it. A young woman eventually picks up the book, reads it, and takes it with her. JC leaves the bookshop with a handwritten note asking the woman to bring it back when she is finished so that others can enjoy it too. The bookshop is Hugendubel in the Schlossstrasse.

Final prompt for Blue Willow after several attempts:

Generate a black and white image with a young man and a young woman in a bookshop. The woman is in the foreground and she is standing reading a book on her hands. The man is in the background, sitting on a sofa. He is watching the woman.

Not quite what I had in mind when I wrote that short story and still quite impressive considering the (lack of) effort required to generate the image.

Just signed up to chess.com and played a few games (at starter level). So far, so good. Lost some, won some and had fun with all of the games. Where was this when I was 12 or 13?

DIY chess clock

I have been playing chess with my son quite a bit lately. It happens from time to time that one of us will take quite some time between moves so we thought it would be nice to play with a clock. Which of course we don´t have and it makes no sense to buy one.

However it is easy to create a simple one so I just made an app exactly for this. I know, there are already many apps doing the same. However I know this one is not tracking me, not trying to sell me anything and not selling my data to third parties.

PS: Updated so that each player has different starting times and also to make it more obvious whose time is still running (button shown as red)

PPS (10th Feb): Updated with Pause and Continue buttons as some times we are interrupted while playing. While paused, Light and Dark buttons show in orange and have no effect until you press the Continue button.

Filters galore

 

I did a quick search for "online free photo filter" and found several options. I was looking for something very specific and while I did not find what I was looking for, oh boy, did I find other filters. I played with them a bit and they have definitely come a long way making even the blandest photo to stand out.

Si tienes el ojo fotográfico medianamente entrenado, hay veces que basta con dar un paseo llevando un móvil para sacar un puñado de fotos razonablemente buenas. Que es justamente lo que hice cuando estuve en Alcalá a principios de diciembre (que no en Navidad). Ni siquiera eran paseos propiamente fotográficos, sino más bien fotos sacadas a toda prisa prácticamente al pasar.
