I did not go up, and I think it was so empty because it was too early. I did ask for permission before doing the shot, since there was no way of avoiding the concierge in the frame (not that I wanted to).

From time to time I go through old photos and try to see them with new eyes (or new tools and/or knowledge), so that photos that had not been selected for the blog at the time now get their 15 seconds of fame.

Not the greatest photo, but still worth it. Original concept sketch for one of the most famous logos. It can be seen at MoMA.

SR-71 Blackbird

This is the second one I see (the other one I saw it years ago in Duxford). The vignette is so much because I did not capture the complete panorama correctly (see black lower corner) but I still like the photo regardless of the strong ghosting (there was no space to go further away). Sometimes I wonder if I should not build a handheld panorama head for these shots. But that means even more weight on the backpack.

I remember one of my Aerodynamics teachers at college once mentioning that his great passion was ships. I guess he would be happy here, on top of an aircraft carrier. We spent here the morning on the day we were leaving and, of course, the weather was great (but chilly). Pity that it was not the other way round, great blue sky on the touring day and rainy on the leaving day.

At the very end of this wing, to the left, they have the newspapers and magazines, including international press. Can you imagine coming here to read the newspaper every day?

New York Public Library

One of the buildings I could not see last time was the Public Library. This time, thanks again to the rainy weather, it was the perfect occassion to spend some hours in this magnificent building and institution. We actually joined one of the tours to get a glimpse of the history of the Library, which is now turning 100 years old and looking great.


The photo above is a stitched photo (as given away by the usual ghosts) taken from one of the lateral staircases. While I was there a couple of young german ladies asked me to take a photo of them (with their camera). Their English was not that good and they were surprised when I explained in German that the photo would not come out that well because of the difference between the dark staircase and the bright background. I´m always tempted to start touching the settings of other people´s cameras (not much appreciated) or directly offer to take the photo with my camera and send it later by e-mail. 


Plus I would not even think of spoiling such a great view placing my face in the very front, although admittedly their face was way nicer than mine...

MoMA

Museum of Modern Art, what a great museum to spend a whole morning. And not to forget, what a great shop they have. I could buy most of the presents in one go. Definitely nice.


In a way, it was good that it was raining as otherwise I would have not seen it. And not only seen it, I could also take photos (!). As it stands, they are advanced enough to make a distinction between photography and flash photography. I still remember the Joan Miró museum in Barcelona and their absurd rule on photography and then you come to the MoMA in New York and photos are allowed pretty much everywhere and to anything, including paintings from Picasso, Dalí, Matisse, Miró, etc.

This is the view from under the Brooklyn Bridge (on the Manhattan side). I also did a video while driving through the bridge from Brooklyn. Question is, does a low res video fit into a mostly-photography blog?
