Reminiscing

Twenty five years ago today my housemates and other friends in Cranfield threw an unexpected farewell party for me. I was leaving the following day back to Spain since a few days later I was meant to join the Air Force training for my military service (conscription was still a thing). I was in my room getting ready, someone asked me to come down and all of a sudden the house was full of people. Unforgettable.

It´s easy to have nice memories when you are surrounded by great people.

2023 - 1998 = 25

1998 fue un año intenso para mí. Justo hoy hace veinticinco años llegué a Cranfield para hacer el proyecto fin de carrera allí. Lo cual quiere decir que llevo media vida fuera de España.

Cuantas vueltas y cuantas cosas buenas me han pasado en estos veinticinco años...

Poniendo un poco de orden, me he entretenido en hacer fotos de algunos sellos del montón de cartas que tengo guardadas (no todas porque eso sería una tarea hercúlea, aunque quizás lo haga poco a poco). Por ahora he resistido la tentación de leer las cartas (algunas no he podido evitarlo, confieso).

Reminiscing about Moscow

Hoy hace 25 años (que se dice pronto) de mi vuelta a España después de pasar seis semanas en Moscú haciendo unas prácticas de verano en el Moscow Aviation Institute a través de IAESTE. Aunque el rendimiento académico de esas semanas fue más bien escueto, guardo muy buen recuerdo por todo lo demás, en particular el grupo de gente de varios países que nos juntamos. Muchos años más tarde una chica griega de ese grupito vino a Berlín a casa de visita y todavía hoy seguimos en contacto, y yo estuve en las bodas de otras dos, una chica rusa en Madrid y otra suiza en St Gallen. 

Aunque hice unas cuantas fotos, ni por asomo todas las que habría hecho hoy. Y de la calidad de la cámara y de las fotos, mejor hablamos otro día. Que pena no haber tenido un smartphone entonces para también hacer un par de videos, como cuando los payasos nos sacaron a un chico egipcio y a mí a la pista para ser el blanco de sus bromas. Pero por entonces no tenía ni siquiera teléfono :-)

Por cierto, en inglés hay una palabra que significa disfrutar de un recuerdo agradable de eventos pasados (reminiscing, indulge in enjoyable recollection of past events).

I was recently back in Alcalá de Henares and decided to pay a visit to a couple of libraries in which I spent countless hours many years ago.

Cuando estaba acabando la carrera, daba clases particulares por la noche a un chico que era calderero. Recuerdo que una vez mientras le explicaba como hacer desarrollos, me dijo, sí, pero cómo hago esto en el taller? En el papel es fácil, pero estas cosas miden mucho más en la realidad. Y que razón tenía...

Sala de espera en Heathrow

A la vuelta de la última vez que fui a EEUU hice escala en Heathrow. Era muy pronto y la sala de espera estaba vacía. Creo que me tomé un cuenco de fruta y me bebí un zumo de naranja mientras que hacía tiempo para el vuelo a Berlín. Sin duda alguna, una forma mucho más cómoda de esperar. Me pregunto como será el de primera clase.

I did not go up, and I think it was so empty because it was too early. I did ask for permission before doing the shot, since there was no way of avoiding the concierge in the frame (not that I wanted to).

For people following this blog since quite a while, you will notice that this is an old photo, just with new post processing.


Reason for this photo to show up here again is that last weekend I was in a similar situation. On my way to Leipzig for the weekend I just remembered leaving the memory card forgotten in the computer at home. And the back up card was not in the pocket either (damn it!). So after arriving I headed for the local Saturn store in the Hauptbahnhof. To my surprise they only sell CF cards from San Disk and they were quite pricey, starting at 25 euros. I obliged and went back home thinking of a checklist (which to this date I have not done) that I have been needing for quite some time now.


Long story short, I found out that the camera actually had a memory card in, although with only 60 shots left from the previous long weekend. In my rush to get to the shop before lunch I had not even checked the camera! In the end I managed with whatever space I had left, decided not to take photos of all the Gothik costumes flooding the city center, and just found some time to go around taking some interesting shots that should be appearing here in a few days.
