Mapa de españoles en Alemania (2020)

If you have some time, it is relatively straight forward to combine data sources and create the map above, which combines geometry and population information at the county level (Kreise) from open sources. Total population iaw Destatis is just above 180k.

Geometry: This dataset from Bundesamt für Kartographie und Geodäsie with Data licence Germany – attribution – Version 2.0

Population; Destatis - Statistisches Bundesamt with Data licence Germany – attribution – Version 2.0

Code adapted from this example with postal code areas from Dr. Juan Camilo Orduz.

As reference, same map in 2001 (note the huge difference in scale!) with total population just below 130k.

Mahnmal Gleis 17

Burg Wernfels (i)

Old churches

During our holidays we had the opportunity to have a look at an church organ. Our daughter was even allowed to put to practice her piano lessons!

While looking for the church we ended up in another one in the same village with some amazing wooden banks. In fact the whole church was amazingly decorated, definitely not what I expected in a small village at the foot of the Alps.

Hohenschwangau

Today we were in a guided tour of the Chancellery . The building is quite impressive, with loads of light and open space.

The photo above is the back garden, while the one below is the room where ministers meet. Click to see a bigger photo.

Wind shelters...

In Spain you usually take a towel and a sun umbrella to the beach. Here wind shelters seem to be the preferred option, although that day having some shade was actually better than not having the wind.

By the way, this photo is taken in a typical beach location and it´s nice not to see any buildings. This is due to the fact that buildings are not high enough to go above the tree barrier and that they are away from the water (unlike in many places in Spain). I would recommend all townhalls in Spain to send somebody to the Baltic sea to take some notes...

Atardecer...

Some times when I show photos to my daughter she tells me that she also wants to listen to them. Obviously still too young to tellapart photos and videos. But if you could listen to this one, you would hear a brasilian DJ with loud music on a beach party. That´s life...

Verboten...

This weekend was one of the hottest ones in Germany so far this year.
We were very fortunate to spend it in the Baltic Sea, in Boltenhagen, where this photo is taken.

As it is easy to imagine, it is forbidden to jump from the pier into the sea. Good to see that Germans can break the rules some times...

My french teacher, Charlotte Noblet, is about to start a cycling tour along the border between Germany and Poland. She will document her experiences in www.veloblog.eu (in French, German and Polish) and, for sure, it will be entertaining and full of funny anecdotes.

I encourage everyone to read her posts, which is a good way of creating a better Europe. The link will be available in the section "Enlaces" while the tour takes place.

Call a bike...

flores...

This bicycles are spread in Berlin and other cities in Germany and they belong to DB (the railway company). Once you are logged as a user, you just have to call a number to get the code that unlocks the electronic lock. When you are finished, you call again to tell the whereabouts of the bicycle and you are charged by the minute.

I must admit this reminds me of the flowers business...

Flores, negocio y cultura...

Close to where I work there is a business which I find quite interesting. It´s just a field with flowers with a sign telling people to cut themselves the flowers they like plus a box to collect the money.

Obviously the business model relies on several things, but especially in the good will of people, who actually pay for what they take home, and the lack of bad will, since nobody seems to take the box with the money.

The question is, would this work elsewhere, say Spain, Chile, Argentina or the USA?

Schloss Cecilienhof...

The meeting of the ministers of Foreign Affairs of the G8 takes place today in Schloss Cecilienhof (Potsdam). This is to prepare the meeting of the G8 prime ministers next week. My wedding celebration was in Schloss Cecilienhof almost four years ago and, obviously, seeing it the news brought some nice memories.

A couple of weeks back we went for a boat trip in Wannsee and I took the photo above. Obviously today is not a day for such trips because of security measures.

Cazadores cazados...

I took this photo in the monument to the jews between Brandenburg gate and Potsdamer Platz. Some times it is quite difficult not to have somebody in the picture and just the other day I was wondering in how many photos taken by tourists I´m on unknowingly. I drive through Checkpoint Charlie on my way to French lessons every week so it must be thousands by now...

Tropical Islands...

This is the hangar that was built for CargoLifter, a company that would design some of the biggest dirigibles ever. But it went bankrupt and this is what is left. At 100 meters tall and 200 m long, it is certainly quite impressive. The photo are actually three stitched photos, that´s why the grey car leaving is three times.
